Once you have your period, you may not look forward to it—but it won’t be that bad either. Sometimes you might get a cramp feeling in your lower body. These can be mild or very painful and are not necessarily consistent from month to month. Sometimes you might feel just fine. The other thing all women learn to cope with is PMS.

PMS (premenstrual syndrome) is a group of symptoms that tend to occur around two weeks before your period. These symptoms can be both physical and physiological and, like cramps, they can vary from month to month. The good news is PMS usually stops as your period starts.

Once you know your usual PMS symptoms, you’ll be better at treating yourself during this time. Here are common symptoms:

  • Acne
  • Bloating
  • Breast tenderness
  • Weight gain
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Headaches/backaches
  • Food cravings/overeating
  • Fatigue
  • Tearfulness
  • Irritability
  • Anxiety
  • Mood swings and/or depression
